Why would I or anyone want to be a “devoted follower” of Jesus? What does that even mean? As I’ve returned to this blog, I’ve realized that has to be the first issue. Why would any of us devote any of our time or attention to a life with God at the center? For some, it is simple – Jesus is their way to eternal salvation. I believe that to my core. But it is my experience that if we stop there, we have missed out on the life that Jesus came to give us here and now. He said that he came to give “life,” and that “to the full,” or my favorite translation of that original term – “abundantly.” (John 10:10). Following Jesus is so much more than just riding his coat-tails into heaven.
As I follow Jesus, I find freedom and joy in this life. Studying Scripture always teaches me new things. As I learn about Jesus and his teachings, I am moved to love (even people who cut across three lanes of traffic, endangering the lives of the other travelers, so they can get to their exit! – I’ll admit, these people challenge me); to be patient and kind (obviously, I need work here); to see everyone as equals – neither to be too prideful nor to think too little of myself; to serve. In short, following Jesus inspires me to be better than I am.
I most definitely do not feel that I have a corner on the truth or THE way to follow Jesus. I do know a few things, though: following Jesus is NOT about a bunch of oppressive rules; it IS a matter of living according to ways and principles that have been given by God, who loves us and wants the best for us; it is not an achievement, but a process which gives value and meaning to life, and ideally blesses those we encounter. I’m still figuring out what all it means to follow Jesus, and especially how to do it. Please join me!
